Image T-389 Schorl $100 Fano Mine, Little Cahuilla Mountain, Cahuilla Mining District, Riverside County, CA 8.3 x 2.3 x 2.1 cm $125 A lustrous, trigonal, single-terminated crystal of Schorl. At 8.3 cm this specimen is larger than most schorl crystals from the Fano Mine. This specimen has a little bit of edge wear as well as 2 repairs; I don’t usually bother with repaired specimens but these are noteworthy enough that repairs are (to me) acceptable. The Fano Mine is the best known pegmatite in Riverside County and is well-known for excellent schorl and aquamarine specimens. The deposit was discovered in 1902. T-387 Schorl on Albaite $45 Fano Mine, Little Cahuilla Mountain, Cahuilla Mining District, Riverside County, CA 3.5 x 2.2 x 2.3 cm A lustrous example of Schorl on a matrix of Albite. The almandine crystal measures 2 x 2 x 2 cm and is complete with only a small area of contacting where it formed against another Garnet. Specimens from this location are seldom seen and are highly prized by collectors of Southern California pegmatite minerals. This location is on private land and has been closed to collecting for a number of years now.
G-172 Almandine $50 Valle de Trinidad, Ensenada Municipality, Baja California, Mexico 1.6 x 1.5 x 1.5 cm A complete all-around crystal of deeply-colored, red Almandine. Image T-388 Rubellite in Montmorillonite with Lepidolite $425 Stewart Mine, Pala Mining District, San Diego County, CA 8 x 4.5 x 5.4 cm Red to pink colored crystals of tourmaline embedded in matrix of stabilized, pink-hued, montmorillonite pocket clay with books of faint-purple lepidolite. The largest Crystal measures 4.6 x 1.3 x 1 centimeters. Matrix specimens from any of the mines in the Pala District, especially the Stewart Mine are quite rare.
Q-642 Quartz on Cleavelandite $95 Sempe Mine, Hiriart Mountain, Pala, Pala Mining District, San Diego County, CA 9.9 x 7.2 x 11 cm Translucent, clay-included Quartz crystals on pegmatite matrix with Cleavelandite. The largest Quartz crystal measures 6.8 cm in length. While certainly not the best looking San Diego quartz specimen, it is noteworthy nonetheless. This specimen most likely dates back to the mid 1970's as the last active mining occurred between 1973 1978. Specimens from this location are highly prized by local collectors and nearly impossible to obtain. In over 35 years of collecting I have only seen 2 other specimens from this location offered for sale. The Sempe Mine was one of many locations on Hiriart Mountain that were worked by local mining legend George Ashley. Image Title Location Dimensions Description C-334 Calcite $85 Minerva #1 Mine, Ozark-Mahoning Group, Cave-In-Rock, Hardin County, IL 9.7 x 8 x 6.4 cm A group of straw-colored calcite crystals in the form of many wheat-sheaf-like bundles. When I obtained this specimen it had a tar-like, bituminous coating which was (99.99%) removed revealing the calcite's satin-like lustre. All of the upper terminations are intact with the exception of the rear of one of the smaller crystals (on the right-hand side of the specimen as oriented in the lower right-hand photo) which, by its slightly pitted surface, leads me to believe that it may be a point of contact, but I'm not 100% sure of that. The bottom of the specimen has angular & spherical indentations indicating that it formed against fluorite & barite. Calcites from this location are not that abundant these days, as the mine has been closed since 1996. F-327 Plagioclase var. Brazil, without any major copper mines, rarely produces good secondary copper minerals. The initial specimens from this find were mostly azurite that displayed as attractive, spherical clusters on matrix. This specimen features many deep-blue spheres of azurite on a gossan matrix. Good specimens like this are hardly seen from this location as it has been defunct for over 3 decades. Most of what I have seen offered for sale in the last 20+ years are bruised and battered specimens that have been culled from the material that was dumped down into the ravine below the mine.
